Volumetric Weight Calculator – Air
Work out the volumetric weight and the chargeable weight of your air shipment, and compare standard air freight with express couriers.
Results are estimates for planning. Volumetric weight = (L×W×H in cm) ÷ divisor (6000 standard, 5000 express), and the chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Contact us for an exact quote.
Frequently asked questions
What is volumetric weight in air freight?
Volumetric weight is a notional weight that reflects the space a shipment takes on the aircraft rather than just its actual weight, because large light-weight goods occupy more room than their weight implies.
How do I calculate volumetric weight?
Multiply the package dimensions in centimetres (length × width × height) and divide by the divisor: 6000 for standard air freight or 5000 for express. The calculator above does this and lets you switch between modes.
What is chargeable weight?
Chargeable weight is the weight you are actually billed on — the greater of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. If volumetric weight is higher, the cost is based on it.
Why are the 6000 and 5000 divisors used?
6000 is the IATA standard for general air cargo (1 m³ ≈ 167 kg), while many express couriers use 5000 (1 m³ ≈ 200 kg), which makes the chargeable weight slightly higher.
